U16 CGSL Finalists - To get to the playoffs, the girls had to upset a previously unbeaten team from Whitby in the quarter-final. They were down 2-1 with less than 10 minutes to play. Just as the ref was about to call time and go to shoot-out, the girls found the back of the net to hand Whitby their first loss and advance us to the CGSL playoff weekend. Next, the girls edged Aurora 1-0 in the semi-final. In the championship, they battled Oshawa Kicks, the league champs from Division 2. After a scoreless half, Oshawa opened the scoring off a free kick. Newmarket United tied it up on a penalty shot. It was a see-saw battle for the balance of the game, but Oshawa scored with 5 minutes to play and sealed the victory as the game ended 2-1. It was a good run for the girls since winning their opening Cup game back in June with a 5-2 victory over Lake Simcoe.

Congratulations to the Girls U11 A Team. The girls recently won the Lake Simcoe Soccer Tournament on September 11th. This concludes a very successful 2011 season for these young ladies, having won the Oshawa and Heart of York Tournaments earlier this summer.  This team will be competing in the L3 division of the CGSL for the 2012 season.

Congratulations to the NU GU13 A Team.  The girls were finalists in the Cataraqui Clippers’ Ambassador Cup tournament July 9th & 10th, 2011 where they played up a level in the U14 division.  The team went undefeated until the championship game!   They met up with Bradford in the finals, losing in penalty kicks after 2 over-time periods.

Congratulations to the NU GU13 A Team for winning the COVI tournament in fine fashion! The team went undefeated over 5 games allowing only 1 goal with stellar goal keeping from Shannon Nichol and a total team effort scoring 16 goals. They met up with league rival SC Toronto in the finals winning 2-0. After a slow start in hot conditions, they managed to pick up the energy levels and dominated the game. After an intensive winter program with technical development and participating in a winter league they showed tremendous skill and tactical play to really separate themselves from the competition. It was a great start to the season on our long journey with aspirations of gaining promotion to L3 in 2012.

Congratulations to the Newmarket United Boys U16 A team for winning the Frank Sobil Spring Classic tournament in Oshawa in May 2011. Their success came as a result of their commitment to playing solid team defense. The team finished the tournament with an impressive 2 goals against in 5 games. It was a great start to their 2011 outdoor season.

Newmarket United 3-2 Lakeland FC (Florida)
Not hot by midsummer standards but after a fall and early winter sunshine and temperatures in the mid and upper 70’s take a real toll on a short bench. Not much to choose between the teams in a pretty balanced first half.  Newmarket got the breakthrough goal midway through the half but quickly surrendered the advantage with a Keystone Cops episode on what started as a fairly straight forward free kick. A more spirited start saw Newmarket go ahead once again and then add an insurance goal by the middle of the half.  At that point we were working hard but comfortable.  With 20 minutes to go Lakeland converted a penalty which set up a very nervy conclusion to the game.  In the last 10 minutes Lakeland had an endless succession of corners that were neither attacked nor defended particularly well.  Other than raising the blood pressure on both benches the frantic conclusion changed nothing and the game ended with a satisfying 3-2 victory.

Newmarket United 3-1 Patriots FC (New York)
The second game was a late, 6:30pm kick off which meant we missed the heat of the day and the extra recovery time was a boost given out short bench. US teams generally play a physical brand of soccer and New York teams have that and more. Straight from the kick off we were subjected to a full court press and were in full retreat trying to come to grips with the physicality and the speed of the Patriot team. We really were second best all over the park. But credit the spirit of the girls they slowly adapted to both the speed and the physical nature of the game and after about 20 minutes they began to actually hold and move the ball with some purpose. Later in the half we converted a well struck corner with a header at the back post. It was against the run of play but as the half ended the teams were much more evenly matched and although we had been under the gun we were looking far more comfortable at the end of the half than at its beginning. The tournament fields for all games were first rate, very flat very fast and very big. Leading by the slimmest of margins we were expecting a long second half as we inevitably tired and the opposition used his full bench. Early on we created chances and were rewarded with an insurance goal.  The two goal cushion eased things to a degree but the Patriots pulled a goal back with 20 minutes to go. The referee played an excellent advantage, a Patriot player went down in full Christiano Ronaldo style and as we switched off to watch the show they went down and scored.  This set up another nail biting finish. The Patriots threw everything forward including the keeper on a couple of occasions. We bent but didn't break and as the game entered its final moments we struck with a killer goal on a classic counter attack. The win coupled with other results meant we had won our division and would play our final game and the championship game on the big stage at the very impressive Disney ESPN center.

Newmarket United 2-2 Mockingbird Valley FC (Kentucky)
It was win or go home for the Kentucky girls and for much of the game they were the hungrier team. While we had another slow start, it was not nearly as scary as the previous night’s game.  After 15 minutes we came to grips with the game and began to open up the Mockingbird defence on several occasions, we were rewarded with a goal on a lovely combination play that ended with a glorious 20 yard strike. The half ended 1-0 and we seemed quite comfortable. A disastrous start to the second saw Mockingbird take the kickoff and pull equal inside a minute without us touching the ball. Needing the win they pushed hard and went ahead with an unfortunate goal that bounced in off the back of the keeper after she had pushed the original shot onto the post. In a reverse of our previous games it was the opposition trying to defend the lead as we pushed for a tying goal. With about 5 to go we finally converted one of several back to back opportunities with a well struck header.

Newmarket United 1-2 Blast FC (Ohio) (5-4 penalties)
The game couldn’t have started more poorly for Newmarket.  The consolation of giving up a goal in the first minute of play is that you have almost an entire game to get it back.  Conceding the early goal only seemed to re focus the team and we were in the ascendancy throughout the half. We clawed one back half way through the first half and in spite of battering the door and squandering several excellent opportunities the score remained tied. Blast had an opportunity to move ahead with a penalty kick with about 20 minutes to play but the shot came off the post back to the shooter who touched it again killing the play. From the bench it appeared our keeper touched it onto the post meaning it should have been live but the follow up was pushed wide regardless.  We had opportunities to win it in regulation but couldn’t get the ball over the line. So the game moved into extra time and once again we had more than ample opportunities to win it, playing a couple of games of pinball inside the 6 yard box and one off the crossbar but in the end it seemed penalties were pre ordained. Ten excellent penalties and the keeper guessed right on one. Unfortunately that is sometimes the way the cookie crumbles. Not a bad way to win but an awful way to lose. We are very proud of the girls, four very tough, very physical games in one of the world’s most prestigious tournament played with only 14 players was a big task and the girls responded magnificently.
