Newmarket United Wins Golden Goal Tournament - On July 5, the NU Boy's U15 Team travelled to Fort Ann, New York, to compete in the 2nd annual Golden Goal Tournament, and after many hard fought games, came away with the championship trophy.  The week long event brought together teams from a number of US states, Ontario, Quebec, and one team from New Delhi, India.  The tournament included skills development, a longest kick / throw competition, team building sessions, and lots of matches between the teams.  In the round robin phase, Newmarket United played well, but was unable to top the group, ending in second place, after a tough match with a state championship team from Vermont.  In the semi-finals, Newmarket played their best game of the tournament against the Phenix de Vaudreuil team from Montreal, scoring their first goal 15 seconds into the game, and going on to win the game 6-1.  While the win was decisive, it was also costly, with an injury to Newmarket midfielder Kevin Huynh, leaving the team with no substitutes for the final later the same day.  The final was played against St. Leonard Football Club, a team Newmarket had battled with all week.  With no substitutes, Newmarket played a tightly controlled game, with plenty of one-touch passing and their well practiced offside trap.  The St Leonard players tried everything they could to break through, but couldn’t get past the strong midfield and defence positions of the Newmarket side.  In the end, Newmarket prevailed over St Leonard 2-1 to win the championship trophy for the week.  Coach Peter Bulfon gave his players high marks for their game, saying “we improved our passing game all week, and executed really well today, but in the end, with no subs, it was sheer determination that won it for our team”.  Assistant coach Dom Giannino added “we kept the ball on the ground, and attacked down the sides – the players did a great job”.  After the closing ceremonies, complete with fireworks, the team headed home to Newmarket with their trophy and championship rings.

On July 12&13, the NU Girl's U18 A Team won the U18 Girls Division of the Ambassador Cup in Kingston with an impressive 5 straight wins. The team finished in first place in the group pool and then went on to win the semi finals 2-1 against Ottawa South United and won the finals against Glengarry Hearts 1-0.
On July 19&20, the team participated in the 2008 CGSL Cup Finals for the Under 18 Level 4 Premier Division in Unionville. The team beat the Aurora Stingers 3-2 in overtime on Saturday in order to advance to the finals on Sunday. The team beat the Unionville-Milliken Strikers 3-1 in the finals. The team finished first overall in group play in Divisions A and B and went on to win the semi finals and finals to bring home the Championship trophy.

The NU Boy's U9 White Team is off to another great start this year. In May the boys braved torrential rain fall and almost freezing rain to make it to the finals. After a hard fought battle we finished second to a strong Dixie team. In June, we entered the Barrie Spirit Fest Tournament. The weather was the opposite of Orangeville, blistering hot. The team faced some strong competition from Brampton and Bolton. The boys went undefeated in 5 games winning the final 3-1 only allowing 2 goals in the whole tournament and one goal came from a penalty kick. Great job boys !!!
