Looking for a fun way to stay involved in the game while developing valuable leadership skills and earning extra income? Becoming a soccer referee is a great opportunity for players, parents, and soccer enthusiasts to give back to the game while learning responsibility, confidence, communication, and decision-making.

Newmarket Soccer Club welcomes new referees each year and works closely with Ontario Soccer to help Match Officials get started. Whether you're interested in officiating small-sided games or full-sided matches, there's a pathway for you.

Which Course is Right for You?

Small Sided Match Official

Minimum Age: 12 years old (by March 31)

The Small Sided Match Official course prepares referees to officiate 5v5 and 7v7 matches. This is the perfect starting point for young officials looking to gain experience in a supportive environment.

You'll be eligible to officiate:

  • U8–U10 Small Sided matches (5v5 & 7v7)
  • Local recreational and festival games


Entry Level Match Official

Minimum Age: 14 years old (by March 31)

The Entry Level Match Official course qualifies referees to officiate both 9v9 and 11v11 matches as a referee or assistant referee. This certification opens the door to officiating recreational and competitive soccer throughout Ontario.

You'll be eligible to officiate:

  • 9v9 and 11v11 matches
  • Recreational and competitive games
  • Assistant Referee assignments

How to Register

All new Match Officials must register through RefCentre.

  1. Visit the Ontario Soccer RefCentre registration page here
  2. Create your RefCentre account and choose either the Small Sided or Entry Level Match Official course based on your age and experience.
  3. Search for an available clinic in your area and complete your course registration.
  4. Courses typically run in April and May, it is best to check RefCentre a couple months before then to see what courses are available in your area
  5. Complete all required online learning and attend the in-person practical session included with your clinic.
  6. Once certified, contact the Newmarket Soccer Club Head Referee to be added to our referee list and begin receiving game assignments for the upcoming season.
