Newmarket Soccer Club Playing Philosophy

The Newmarket Soccer Club is committed to development. We put the players at the forefront of all of our thinking and give the players freedom to make their own decisions in a safe and fun-filled learning environment.

We are striving to be the best Regional Club in the district with a strong focus on player and coaching development.

Playing Style

In possession: We want our players to be comfortable on the ball while looking to play through the thirds using intelligent possession, with the aim to play forward as quickly and efficiently as possible in order to create goal scoring opportunities.

Out of Possession: We want our teams/players to defend intelligently by trying to win the ball back as early and as high up the pitch as possible.

Grassroots – U8 to U13

The aim within the grassroots ages is to focus on Player Development through fun and engaging sessions that encourage decision-making.

Within the U8 to U13 age groups, if numbers permit, each team plays within a larger pool of players called a squad. The rosters are open, meaning that players will move from team to team within their own age group. If there is more than one team within the age group, the players are split into gameday rosters. Due to the structure of the league, players are tiered to ensure appropriate competition for the players. Week to week the coaches may move players between teams to ensure they are challenged or gaining the necessary confidence to get them to a certain level of play.

There are no scores or standings in the Player Development ages of U8 to U13, throughout the Province.

Due to facility and coaching constraints, spaces within the program are limited based on the age group with our maximum roster number listed below. Our goal is not to "cut" players but to provide players with an opportunity to learn and grow. However, it is important that players play at an appropriate level for their development, and coaches may suggest that this level is not yet right for your child.

  • Under 8/9 (5v5) - Max 20 Roster spots (Gameday roster = 10 players)
  • Under 10/11 (7v7) - Max 24 Roster spots (Gameday roster = 12 players)
  • Under 12/13 (9v9) - Max 32 Roster spots (Gameday roster = 16 players)

The coach may offer your child a "training player" spot, allowing your child to come out to training only. As a training player, they are not on the team's roster as such they cannot compete in regular season games. However, they may be asked to compete with the team as a "call-up" player. If your child is offered a "training player" spot, we recommend they also play within the Newmarket Soccer Club's House League program, so they are able to get regular playing time.

Competitive – U14 & Up

At U14, scores and standings are recorded so players are now selected to be a part of the program. Players are now part of A or B teams. Teams are likely to sometimes train together and if selected for the B team, do have the opportunity to be called up to play.
